Section #1
  1. Make up a cheer for your troop, complete with actions.  It could be used when a girl completes a badge, for a bridging activity, to welcome a new girl or adult, or to recruit girls into the world of Girl Scouting.
  2. Carefully read the words of your school cheers.  Do any of the cheers have words which degrade or embarrass a player?  Substitute a different word or phrase and submit this idea to the school principal or head cheerleader and their advisor.
  3. Make up actions for a pep song.  Include claps, kicks, dance steps and somersaults.  Teach these actions to several girls in your troop or to a younger troop and perform the pep song at your next Girl Scout gathering for the community.
  4. Think of a cheer, sign or a word of encouragement to use for the Girl Scout athletes in your community.  Surprise them at their next game.
  5. Attend a tournament or three games.  Observe cheerleaders from three different schools.  What made one cheerleading team really stand out in your thinking? Learn a new cheer by observing them.

  1. Practice cheering for your school's athletic teams.  Ask the cheerleaders if they would share with your troop what it is like to be in front of a crowd.  Maybe they would help you with your cheer.
  2. Read a book about cheerleading.  Get some new ideas to help make you an even better cheerleader.
  3. Sit with fans from your school and yell with the cheerleaders to your team at five events during the school year.  Be a good sport.  Discuss what makes a good sportswoman.  Keep quiet when you disagree with the referee.  Offer words of encouragement to the players in defeat as well as victory.
  4. Discuss ways to keep the crowd from being poor sports to either team members, coaches, or referees.
  5. Price cheerleading uniforms.  List ways you could save money if you were a cheerleader buying these items.
  6. Practice cheering together with three or more Girl Scouts.  Take turns being "head cheerleader."  Be a confident leader when you are the head cheerleader.  Announce which cheers will be done and how they will be done different than the usual way.  When you are not the head cheerleader, be a cooperative member of the squad.  Adjust to changes and support the head cheerleader.
